Age Spots

Despite their name, age spots have nothing to do with how old you are. These patches on the skin are also known as brown spots, liver spots, sun spots, lentigo and solar lentigine; all of which mean exactly the same thing; and they’re the result of damage from the sun.
Age spots can be a spectrum of different colours; red, light or dark brown, or almost black; and they are usually harmless, although you may find them unsightly.
These spots occur when the body responds to sun exposure and, often when you have pale skin, an abnormal pigment is formed. Because of this, they’re most common in areas that are regularly exposed to the sun, such as hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead.

Age Spots on Face

The face is exposed to the sun more than any other part of the body, which is why you may notice brown spots forming in this area. Many people feel very self conscious about this and look for ways to remove age spots on the face.
Fortunately there are methods to help you remove age spots; but your first port of call will be to have a consultation with a skin specialist.
Laser treatment is an extremely effective way to remove age spots, targeting the pigment in the skin. You may require one or two sessions to remove the spots completely, leaving the skin as it was before the spot appeared.
Cryosurgery involves the removal of abnormal skin cells through freezing. This is generally a very quick procedure with few side effects. The freezing agent is simply applied with a swab or sprayed on.
Facial chemical peels involve the application of a chemical to remove the upper layers of skin, and microdermabrasion can rejuvenate the skin to reduce the appearance of age spots by revealing the fresher skin hiding underneath!
Over the counter, you’ll find topical creams which claim to bleach the spots but these have varying results, often lightening the skin around the spot instead and causing the spot to therefore become more prominent. Always consult a specialist before considering bleaching.
In the case of age spots, prevention is far simpler than the cure, simply cover up in direct sunlight and always wear a sun cream.
