What is gastric Botox?
Gastric Botox is a non-surgical weight loss treatment. Using an endoscope (a thin flexible camera passed through the mouth), the doctor injects botulinum toxin into specific areas of the stomach wall. This relaxes the stomach muscles so food leaves the stomach more slowly. You feel full sooner, stay full for longer and feel less hungry between meals, which makes it easier to eat smaller portions.
How it works
- You are sedated, so you sleep through the procedure
- An endoscope is guided through the mouth into the stomach
- Botulinum toxin is injected into the stomach muscle
- You rest for a short time and go home the same day
Is gastric Botox right for you?
Your doctor will confirm whether the treatment is suitable during your consultation.

Your treatment step by step
Consultation
We review your weight, medical history and goals, and check that the treatment is safe for you.
Preparation
Your doctor gives you fasting instructions, and tells you whether to stop any medicines before the procedure.
Procedure
Under sedation, the injections are given through an endoscope. It takes around 20–30 minutes.
Recovery
You rest for a short time, then go home with a companion. Most people return to normal activities within a day or two.
After your treatment
- Mild sore throat or bloating for a day or two
- Start with liquids and soft food, then return to normal meals as advised
- No driving, alcohol or important decisions for 24 hours after sedation
- Feeling full sooner usually begins within the first few weeks
- Results are best when combined with a balanced diet and regular activity
What results can I expect?
Gastric Botox is a helping hand, not a complete solution. It reduces hunger so it is easier to change your eating habits. Results vary from person to person, and the best results come when the treatment is combined with a healthy eating plan and regular activity.
The effect fades gradually over about 4–6 months. By then, the aim is that your new habits help you keep the weight off.
Safety and side effects
Gastric Botox is generally well tolerated. Side effects are usually mild and short-lived.
Common, mild side effects
- Sore throat from the endoscope
- Bloating, nausea or indigestion
- Constipation
- Tiredness after sedation
Rare risks
- Allergic reaction to the medicine
- Bleeding or injury to the stomach from the endoscopy (very rare)
- Muscle weakness, if the toxin spreads beyond the stomach (very rare)
Is gastric Botox approved for weight loss?
Botulinum toxin is approved for several medical and cosmetic uses. Its use for weight loss is off-label, which means it is not specifically licensed for this purpose. Your doctor will explain the evidence, the benefits and the risks so you can make an informed decision.

Frequently asked questions
Is gastric Botox painful?
No. You are sedated during the procedure, so you will not feel it. Afterwards some people have a sore throat or mild stomach discomfort for a day or two.
How long does the procedure take?
The injections themselves take around 20–30 minutes. Allow a few hours at the clinic for preparation and recovery from sedation.
When can I go back to work?
Most people go back to work within one or two days. You should not drive for 24 hours after sedation.
When will I see results?
Most people notice they feel full sooner within the first few weeks. Weight loss is gradual and depends on following your eating plan.
How long does the effect last?
The effect usually lasts around 4–6 months, as the body gradually breaks down the toxin. The treatment can be repeated if your doctor agrees it is suitable.
Is the weight loss permanent?
The Botox effect is temporary. Keeping the weight off depends on the eating and activity habits you build during these months.
Is it the same as cosmetic Botox?
It uses the same type of medicine, but it is injected into the stomach muscle through an endoscope, not into the face.
