Breast Reduction

If your breasts are causing you health or cosmetic problems, Surgical Breast Reduction (Mammoplasty) might be the best option for you. Overly large breasts are not only a cosmetic nuisance to some women, but also the cause of physical discomfort, pain, and for some, a lack of confidence and self-esteem. Surgical breast reduction at The Look Younger Clinic is a popular and effective procedure for large, heavy and sagging breasts.

Surgical Breast Reduction, or Mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed under general anaesthetic. Fat, glandular tissue, and skin are removed from your breasts, which are then reshaped and the nipples re-positioned. It is therefore suitable for a wide range of candidates, regardless of age. A breast reduction is a more invasive procedure and can require an overnight stay in hospital, as well as a resting period of 2-3 weeks and 6 weeks in total for recovery following surgery.

The biggest advantage of a breast reduction is that your surgeon is able to completely change the shape of your breasts and lift them. Your nipples can also be re-positioned in proportion to your new smaller breasts.

Surgical Breast Reduction is ideal for those whose breasts contain more glandular tissue than fat. If you have sagging or empty breasts or are unhappy about the shape of your breasts or the positioning of your nipples, a Mammoplasty and Mastopexy procedure may be the best way forward. Other patients may require both a reduction and augmentation using implants.

It is not uncommon for men to have an enlarged chest area, known as gynecomastia. Read more information about male chest reduction.

After surgery, you will probably feel weak. You may feel sore for 2 to 3 weeks. You also may feel pulling or stretching in your breast area. Although you may need pain medicine for a week or two, you can expect to feel better and stronger each day.

DDD cups usually weigh around 5-6 pounds, which is roughly 2.5-3 pounds for each breast. This is about 20-30% heavier than DD breasts and 50% heavier than D breasts.

Anesthesia will be given during the procedure, but you should expect to feel sore for two to three days after surgery. You will be prescribed pain medication, and your surgeon may advise placing wrapped ice packs gently over sore areas to help with pain and swelling.

Generally, you should wait at least six weeks before you switch to regular bras again. Don’t underestimate your compression bra. It’s not sexy, but it works to keep your breasts in place as you heal, helping speed the recovery process as well as ensure your results are the most natural-looking they can be

One of the most significant advantages of weight loss after breast reduction surgery. Most women report feeling much more capable of exercising and maintaining their weight after the operation. It’s common for women to lose between 10 and 20 pounds in the months following surgery

sleeping on your back keeps your breasts in an optimal position for healing. We therefore recommend you keep this position for eight to 12 weeks post-surgery.

Breast volumes ranged from 48 to 3100 mL. Although breast volume was not significantly affected by age, it was significantly affected by BMI, with the breast volume of overweight and obese women being two-to-three times greater than women with normal BMI’s.

a DDD is the same as an F—at times they are labeled differently based on the brand. After size D you can either go up to size DD which is the bra size equivalent to size E, size DDD which is equivalent to size F, and size DDDD which is equivalent to size G

it is recommended that patients with a cup size>or=D or a bra size>or=18 could be categorized as having large breasts, with all other patients considered average in size.

Get a baseline mammogram before surgery and another one after surgery to help detect any future changes in your breast tissue. Stop smoking well in advance of breast reduction surgery. Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding.

Scarring from surgical incision looks like a thin, raised line on top of your skin. This is called scar tissue. At first, the area is red or pink in color. As the scar heals, it will darken and flatten

Refrain from getting your breasts wet – either in a bath, shower or pool, for the first weeks after your surgery. Don’t smoke. Smoking negatively impacts your body’s ability to heal after a surgery. Don’t wear an underwire bra, which can not only be painful but also prevent your breast implants from settling properly.

Between one and two months after surgery, the breasts will begin to feel natural and soft. And, while breast reduction recovery may be complete, the swelling could continue for up to a year.

The band should fit snugly, but comfortably, and not ride up. If your bra has multiple rows of fasteners, it should fit on one of the middle adjustments. That way it can be loosened or tightened if necessary to accommodate post-surgery changes. Fabric should be soft and not irritate healing incisions.

A 2012 study published in the American Journal of Human Biology determined that women with larger breasts tend to weigh more, have a higher body mass index and more body fat than women with smaller breasts. Shape magazine notes, though, that it takes losing about 20 percent of your weight to drop an entire cup size.

After about two weeks, you should be able to return to work, depending on what your profession is. Keep in mind that you may want to avoid lifting heavy objects for several weeks after the procedure and you should avoid strenuous activity for at least six weeks, allowing the body to heal

Everyone recovers at different rates, and your unique procedure will determine your length of recovery. However, you should plan to wear your bra for around 6 weeks after surgery. You should wear it as much as possible (even while sleeping), but can remove it to shower.

Patients can typically resume showering after two to three days. Before this period, you can take a sponge bath but should avoid washing your incisions, as well as washing your hair since this can put stress on your incisions as the skin is pulled.

You will stay in the recovery area for approximately 1-2 hours. Typically, it takes this amount of time until your pain is well controlled, you are alert, and you can drink without being nauseated. A Foley catheter will be placed prior to surgery (once you are asleep) to monitor your fluid status.

If your doctor told you to take your medicines on the day of surgery, take them with only a sip of water. Take a bath or shower before you come in for your surgery. Do not apply lotions, perfumes, deodorants, or nail polish. Do not shave the surgical site yourself.

Pat your incisions dry with a clean towel. Don’t rub them. Don’t take tub baths until your incisions and drain sites are fully healed because soaking may increase the risk of infection. You may be able to take tub baths about 6 to 8 weeks after your surgery but speak with your doctor before you do

Breast reduction surgery is done under general anesthesia. This is medicine that keeps you asleep and pain-free. For a breast reduction, the surgeon removes some of the breast tissue and skin. Your nipples may be moved higher to reposition them for cosmetic reasons

Risks of the actual procedure include decreased sensation or loss of sensation in the nipple, infection, poor wound healing, asymmetry and the death of fat tissue in the breast. A scary, but very rare, complication is death of the skin on the nipple, which results in subsequent removal of the nipple

Please refrain from caffeine-containing drinks after surgery as they may elevate your blood pressure and can increase the risk of bleeding.
